Slovakia

We visited Slovakia in the spring of 2026. We expected Czechia light but ended up being delighted with the country. It is a country of small towns and small cities, even Bratislava feels cozy compared to its more famous neighbors of Vienna, Prague, and Budapest.

The camping infrastructure is adequate, but there has not been a whole lot of new development. A lot of the campgrounds are left over from the communist era so the buildings are older and sometimes “quaint”. But they owners took pride in keeping them clean and everything while old always worked.

The roads are fair to good. The lanes are plenty wide, but on secondary roads the asphalt was intact but sometimes a little rough. The freeways were good, and are among the newest roads in the country. It is a small country with a relatively small population so traffic was light.

We really enjoyed Slovakia. The people were charming and quick to engage. From our first day there until the end we had many positive interactions with people who went out of their way to make us welcome.

Favorite Thing.

Ton-Bratislava. I really enjoyed the downtown, it was big enough to be interesting and one day they had a fun national race going on that involved a lot of regular people. The next day when we had our RV serviced we met two of the participants and their co-workers were quite proud of them.

Ron-One day we went to a wine region near Bratislava centered around the village of Modra and accidently bumped into the owner of a winery as he was doing some chores outside his shop. It turned into a fun day tasting his wine as he gave us a spontaneous tour of his winery. We met his Dad who had been a professor of oenology at the local University and a prolific author. It was a great spontaneous day.

Disappointment

Ton-I had low expectations for Slovakia because I knew so little about the country so there were no disappointments

Ron-I also knew almost nothing about Slovakia and would not have gone there without Ton’s push. It was a fun place to visit and I think they could do more to market themselves and hopefully build some infrastructure for camping.

Surprise

Ton-My surprise was the winery in Modra that was Ron’s high light. I didn’t expect much and the day was great.

Ron-I expected Slovakia to be a beer country, but we ended up buying a lot of wine there. I liked their wine better than the more famous Hungarian wines.
